Coupling of an accretion disk corona with a weakly magnetic neutron star and a possible relation with quasi-periodic oscillations.
Abstract
We propose a mechanism whereby rotating, weakly magnetized neutron stars, which are thought to be present in some low mass X-ray binaries, may lose energy to the accretion disk via an electrodynamical coupling between the magnetic field of the star and magnetic loops in a disk corona. This mechanism may solve some of the problems posed by the observations of these systems. In particular, the properties of the power spectra of some of the sources, in which quasi-periodic oscillations are observed, can be explained, and especially it can be understood why the lowfrequency noise in some sources may be much reduced in power with respect to the power in the oscillations.
