Annual variations of the turbopause in the 30-80 deg N latitude region
Abstract
Information on turbopause height (TH) and the thermospheric turbulence maximum is obtained on the basis of observations of sporadic-E-layer parameters at a number of vertical-sounding stations. Annual variations of TH and of the vertical turbulent transfer coefficient (VTTC) at latitudes of 30-45, 45-60, and 70-80 deg N are examined. It is shown that the TH varies from 100 to 110 km and is maximal at lower latitudes in the summer and at higher latitudes in the winter. At 45-60 deg N, the THs and VTTCs are greater during solstices than during equinoxes. The results for 30-45 deg N are in satisfactory agreement with rocket and incoherent-scattering data.
