Activity in late-type dwarfs. I. Walvaren and Johnson photometry of flares and SPOT variations on GL 867A (= FK Aqr) in 1979.
Abstract
We present optical photometry of flares and spot variations on the flare/BY Draconis star Gl 867A (= FK Aqr). These observations are made in the Walraven intermediate passband system. Based on this and other material already published a new period determination has been made. The result suggests that the system may not be corotating as suggested earlier. In this regard it is similar to the prototype spotted star. BY Dra itself. Time-integrated rates of energy lost by optical flaring are derived and compared with previously published results. No evidence of season-to-season changes are evident. The advantages of the Walraven photometric system for the study of stellar flares are discussed and the nature of the optical flare light is examined in the light of measurements made in this system.
