The primary magnetic field of the sun and solar activity.
Abstract
The existence of prolonged epochs of reduced solar activity (e.g., the Maunder minimum) is explained in the framework of Leighton's (1969) model, taking into account the slowly varying primordial magnetic field of the sun. The relationship between background magnetic fields and the intensity of 11-year cycles is established, opening the possibility of predicting solar-cycle maxima.
