The decay parameter of the ring current.
Abstract
Different authors have obtained different values for the ring-current decay parameter tau. Reasons for this are calculation errors in determining tau according to short-duration intervals, neglect of the magnetic effect of surface currents, and an insufficiently rigorous selection of quiet intervals. A novel method for determining tau is proposed which is free from these errors. A dependence of tau on the ring-current intensity is obtained according to which tau decreases as the DR current increases.
