Diagnostics for Propagating Waves in the Solar Photosphere
Abstract
The effects of pure acoustic waves of different frequencies on a number of Fe I lines formed in the photosphere are investigated. A dynamical model of the waves which considers velocity, temperature, and pressure fluctuations as functions of time is used to compute the line profiles. The extent to which the waves cause the lines to fluctuate, the time-averaged properties of the line profiles, and the measurability of vertical phase differences are all determined as functions of the frequency of the propagating wave. It is concluded that there is no intrinsic radiative limit, for frequencies of current observational interest, on ability to measure phase differences. The asymmetry induced by the propagation of acoustic waves in the photosphere is found to depend on the frequency of the waves. Acoustic waves contribute only marginally to line broadening.
