The Caltech millimeter wave interferometer
Abstract
The Caltech millimete wave interferometer is described, and some of the first results from its use are discussed. The interferometer uses three dishes of 10.4 m diameter and surface errors of less than 60 microns rms. The motion system of the dishes along a T-shaped track is discussed, and the characteristics of the receivers and local oscillators are described. A simplified diagram of the reference and phase lock scheme is shown and discussed. The interferometer's analog backend system, which uses filter spectrometers, is addressed. The data sampling is discussed, including gain and phase corrections, sideband separation, amplitude calibration, and phase calibration. The interferometer control system is described, and some results on CO observations of galaxies are briefly given.
