Venera-15 and Venera-16 - Synthetic-aperture radar on Venus satellite orbit
Abstract
The procedures associated with mapping and height profile plotting of the surface of Venus using Venera-15 and Venera-16 are discussed, and technical characteristics of the radar systems are included. The side-looking radars onboard the two stations operate at a wavelength of 8 cm and have a 2.7 x 2.7 and 1.3 x 1.3 km surface resolution in the onboard-processing and ground-processing modes, respectively. The approaches to data processing at the ground receiving stations are detailed as well, with an examination of illustrative images of the surface of Venus and height profiles along the flight path of the satellites.
