Metallicities and distances of galactic clusters as determined from UBV-data. IV. The distance to the Hyades.
Abstract
A method is presented to determine the distance modulus to the Hyades cluster independently of the shape of any ZAMS by comparing the Hyades main sequence to a parallax limited sample of Gliese stars where both the Gliese and the Hyades stars are corrected for any metallicity effects. In the case of the Gliese stars statistical errors due to a parallax limited sample are taken into account and it is shown that they follow the trend expected from the Lutz-Kelker correction. A distance modulus of (m - M)Hyades = 3.m261 ± 0.m109 is then derived by using a fitting procedure.
