Photoionization rates in the interstellar medium
Abstract
The Gondhalekar et al. (1980) determination of the radiation field from 2740 A down to the Lyman limit at 912 A is the basis of the present calculation of photoionization rates for several species that are of importance in the interstellar medium. The results obtained are compared with previous estimates by De Boer et al. (1973). It is noted that large radiation field variations will occur in regions of space near OB associations or within dense dust clouds, with corresponding effects on the photoionization rates.
