Amplification and maintenance of thin magnetic flux tubes by compressible convection.
Abstract
The authors present a model that includes both the effects of diffusion and proper treatment of the Lorentz forces, for a thin tube whose depth is of the order of a scale height. The model includes both magnetic pressure (leading to evacuation of the tube) and curvature forces. It is found that while small tubes are limited principally by pressure effects, tubes with fluxes ≡1018mx exert an important retarding force on the convection that causes them.
