The Stability of Magnetohydrostatic Atmospheres
Abstract
Using the analysis of Schindler et al. (1983) and Hood (1983), the `local' stability of Zweibel (1981) is extended to include the previously neglected magnetic tension terms. A particular magnetohydrostatic field is shown to be stable if the parameter, 2βH, is small enough. This is in contradiction to the previous `local' analysis.
