Speckle image reconstruction of solar features
Abstract
Speckle image reconstruction procedures have been applied to 5 x 6 arcsec patches of the solar surface. Data were recorded with a CID (charge-injection device) sensor. This detector has the wide dynamic range and linearity required to record accurately the extremely low contrast speckle that occurs for extended objects such as the sun. Reconstructed images of spot penumbrae and of pores show evidence for detail at scales as fine as 0.11 arcsec, despite prevailing seeing conditions of 1 - 2 arcsec. The finest structures appear to be embedded in penumbral filaments. Coarser sub-arcsecond detail appears in some, but not all, of the pores studied. The presence of such fine, presumably magnetically controlled detail suggests that much can be learned from high-resolution solar surface imaging from space.
