Dielectronic recombination at low temperatures
Abstract
Calculations are presented for the total dielectronic recombination coefficients of all ions of C, N, and O for which the recombining ion has n = 2 valence electrons, in the temperature range of 1000-60,000 K. A fit is obtained for the coefficients and a convenient function of temperature. It is found that the dielectronic recombination coefficients are greater than those for direct radiative recombination in most of the cases considered over the main part of the temperature range. This investigation utilizes the approach of Storey (1981) in that the formulation is in terms of detailed balancing arguments, relating the populations of autoionizing and continuum states, and in that the calculations are carried out in LS coupling.
