The Zelenchuk 6 m telescope (BTA) of the USSR Academy of Sciences.
Abstract
A description of the alt-azimuth mounted 6-meter telescope (BTA) of the Special Astrophysical Observatory, Academy of Sciences, USSR, is presented. The telescope, in operation for six years, is located in the North Caucasus region at an altitude of 2070 meters above sea level and about 40 km to the south of the village of Zelenchuk. The telescope contains five spectrographs that have been designed for spectral observations, including a main stellar spectrograph, a fast spectrograph with an image tube at the prime focus with four optical cameras, and an echelle spectrograph at the secondary focus with a Bowen type camera. In addition, some details of the telescope's building and dome, as well as of the local astroclimate, are provided.
