Properties and nature of Be ANS shell stars.
Abstract
Ground-based observations of 88 Her indicate: (1) periodic variations of the shell Balmer lines and of the V/R ratio of the double H-alpha emission line with a period of 86.7221 d, which appears to be stable since 1912.2; (2) doubling of the H-alpha absorption core on the descending branch of the RV curve; and (3) long-term variations of the brightness and color of the star, correlated with substantial changes of the intensities of absorption and emission lines in the optical spectrum. The limitations which these data impose on various models of the Be phenomenon are examined. It is concluded that a comparison of the optical spectral and photometric observations of 88 Her with current hypotheses about Be variability appears to slightly favor the binary origin of the variations, though the question remains open.
