Interstellar depletion of Fe, Mn and Mg derived from S 59 observations of 67 stars.
Abstract
Summary. Interstellar lines of Fe Ii, Fe I, Mg II, Mg I and Mn II have been detected with the Utrecht orbiting stellar Spectrophotometer S 59. We present equivalent widths for lines in 67 bright stars in the solar vicinity. From the Fe II and Mn II data the average logarithmic abundance ratio is found, log (Fe/Mn) =0.95+0.10. With the help of data on total interstellar hydrogen per star, the average abundance of free iron in the interstellar gas log (Fe/H) = -6.2 is found. The depletion of the elements in the interstellar gas and the formation and composition of dust is discussed. Key words: interstellar matter - abundances - dust - UV-radiation
