Curium: A new magnetic element
Abstract
We have performed, at Institut Laue-Langevin, the first neutron diffraction studies of curium metal and curium dioxide on the 100 mg scale. The lattice parameter of CmO 2 at 5 K is a = 5.369 Å (CaF 2 structure). The coherent scattering amplitude of curium was found to be b244cm = 0.95 (0.03) × 10 -12cm. Curium metal orders antiferromagnetically below 52 K; the propagating vector of the magnetic structure is q = (0, 0, {1}/{2}) .
