Comments concerning the photoionization model for excitation of resonance lines of He I and He II in the solar chromosphere.
Abstract
Recently there has been much discussion of the production of the solar resonance lines of He I and He II by extreme-ultraviolet photons impinging on the upper chromosphere and photoionizing He I and He II, with the subsequent recombinations producing the emission lines. In this paper the consequences of this model for the emergent line profiles are examined and are shown to lead to an apparent contradiction with the observed profiles.
