Near Infrared Observations of Cygnus X-3
Abstract
THE system known as Cygnus X-3 has been extensively studied at radio wavelengths (where it exhibits extraordinary variability1-3), in X rays (where it exhibits a 4.8 h period4-6), and in the infrared at 1.6 and 2.2 µm (where it also displays a 4.8 h period as well as large flares7,8). Attempts have also been made to detect Cyg X-3 in visual and near infrared wavelengths9,10. Here we present the results of a series of observations made at near infrared wavelengths, λeffective ~=0.85 µm on ten nights in July and August 1973.
