Polarization of Red System CN Lines in Sunspots
Abstract
The relative intensities of the Zeeman components of molecular spectral lines are not necessarily symmetric in a strong magnetic field. This leads to non-zero net polarization for molecular lines formed in sunspots. The effect is particularly striking for lines of the (0, 0) band of the red system of CN.
