Solar Oblateness and Equatorial Brightening
Abstract
Equatorial brightening near the limb associated with an elevated temperature in the upper photosphere is discussed. It is not possible to obtain satisfactory agreement with the observations simultaneously at both of the color bands employed for the observations. The energy requirements of such hypothetical excess photospheric temperatures are severe, and the stresses needed for a force balance do not seem to be present.
