On the separation by Balmer-line photometry of high and low luminosity stars having H-alpha in emission.
Abstract
Among the early-type stars found in objective-prism surveys to have lla in emission, the majority are dwarf Be stars but about 10 per cent are normal Ia supergiants, whose absolute magnitudes are about = - 7. This paper describes a search for an efficient method of separating these two groups. It is found that, with photoelectric measures using narrow-band filters centered on Ha and H , it is possible to separate from a mixed sample about two-thirds of the Be stars and two-thirds of the supergiants.
