On the Brightness of Chromospheric Spicules.
Abstract
Athay and Michard have interpreted the line widths of chromospheric spicules in terms of an electron temperature of 50000 or higher. This paper demonstrates that such high-temperature spicules would be invisible in both Ha and K. A temperature below 20000 and an electron density of 1011 are sufficient to produce the observed emission and contrast in these lines.
