Classification of Late M-Type Stars from Low-Dispersion Spectra in the Near Infrared.
Abstract
A system of classification of late M-type stars (M6-M10) from objective-prism spectra in the near infrared (X 6800 to X 8800) is proposed It is based principally on strengthening VO absorption, starting at M7 in the X 7400 and X 7900 regions, and on the TiO absorption in the X 8300 region, starting at M6 5. This system is a result of the study of the spectral variations of M-type variables in the near infrared, in which the spectral changes were correlated with the light-variations. Experience has shown that it is possible, by this means, to classify the great majority of the late M-type spectra observed. One interesting type of spectrum which does not fit into this system of classification is described in some detail.
