The Absorption Coefficient of the Free-Free Transitions of the Negative Hydrogen Ion.
Abstract
The absorption coefficients pertaining to the free-free transitions of H are evaluated throughout the visual range and the entire infrared, on the basis of an approximate calculation, and are utilized for the determination of the Rosseland mean of the mass absorption coefficient of H (sum of free-free and bound-free transitions) in the low-temperature range (o.8 < 5o4o/T < 2.0). These data set a lower limit to the opacity of late-type stellar atmospheres, pending the discovery of further absorption mechanisms likely to become relevant in the low-temperature range
